Instant Data Scraper not working? Fixes and what to try instead
Wrong table, missing pages, blank results. A practical checklist for fixing Instant Data Scraper, and an honest look at when it is time to try something else.

Instant Data Scraper is a popular free Chrome extension, and on plenty of pages it does what it promises in two clicks. When it does not, the failure is usually one of a handful of things: it picked the wrong table, it will not follow the Next button, or it came back empty. This guide goes through each, in the order you are most likely to hit them.
A note on sources: Instant Data Scraper is published by Flavr Technology, and its Chrome Web Store listing says it uses heuristics to predict which data on a page matters, and that you can adjust the selection if the prediction is wrong. Most fixes below follow from that and from how modern pages are built. We make a competing tool, the Grabby no-code web scraper, so weigh the last section accordingly.
Why is Instant Data Scraper not detecting my table?
The extension does not use a fixed rule per site. It looks at the page structure and guesses which repeating block of elements is the data. That works well on a clean results page and less well when the page has a sidebar list, a related-items strip and the real results all built from similar markup. It may pick the wrong one, or none.
Fixes to try, in order
- Let the page finish loading and scroll once, then open the extension. A list that is still being drawn cannot be detected.
- Press the Try another table button to cycle to the next candidate. The right one is often second or third.
- Refresh the page and try again from a clean state, in case another extension changed the page.
- Narrow the page first. A search with filters applied tends to give one obvious list instead of several.
Instant Data Scraper only scrapes one page: the Next button
Scraping past page one needs the extension to know which control moves forward. If it did not find one, or found the wrong one, you get a single page of rows. The extension has a Locate Next button step for this: choose it, then click the actual Next link or arrow on the page, then start the crawl.
- Pick the real next page control, not a page number and not a “next article” link in the footer.
- If the site has a Load more button or loads results as you scroll, the setup differs from numbered pages. Check which one the site uses first.
- On slow sites, increase the delay and the maximum wait time. The listing says both are adjustable, and too short a wait means the next page is read before it has loaded.
- Check the button is not disabled. On the last page it usually is, and the crawl is meant to stop there.

Instant Data Scraper shows blank or empty results
Blank output usually traces back to one of these.
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing detected at all | Content is injected after load, or the list is virtualised | Wait, scroll, then reopen the extension |
| Columns exist but are empty | Wrong table selected, or lazy content has not rendered | Try another table; scroll the items into view first |
| Nothing found on an embedded widget | The data sits inside an iframe | Open the framed page directly in its own tab and scrape that |
| Works on some sites, fails on one | That site’s markup does not form an obvious repeating pattern | Try a tool where you click the list yourself |
Dynamic content and iframes
Many modern pages draw their lists with JavaScript after the first load, and some put the real content inside an iframe. A tool that analyses page structure sees only what is present at that moment. If you can, open the iframe’s own address in a new tab. If not, a point-and-click tool where you choose the list yourself is a better fit than an automatic guess.
Instant Data Scraper not working on a page that needs login
The extension runs in your own browser, so it can generally read a page you are signed in to. When a signed-in page still returns nothing, the usual culprits are the same as above: content that loads late, content in a frame, or an extension that is not allowed to run on that site. Check its site access on the extensions page and reload.
Extension conflicts and permissions
- Disable other extensions that modify pages (ad blockers, dark-mode tools, price trackers) and retry. They can change the markup the scraper analyses.
- Check the extension’s site access in
chrome://extensions. If it is limited to specific sites, allow it on the one you are scraping. - Try an incognito window with the extension allowed there. If it works, something in your normal profile is interfering.
- Update Chrome, and compare your extension version with the one in the Web Store listing.
- Chrome’s own internal pages and the Web Store cannot be scraped by any extension.
When it is time to switch tools
Instant Data Scraper is a good fit for a clean, single-list page. It is a worse fit when you need to choose exactly which list to read, handle Load more buttons or infinite scroll deliberately, or follow each item into its detail page. In those cases an automatic guess is the limit, and no setting fixes it.
Then Grabby is a point-and-click option: you click one item to select the list, choose Pagination, Load More or Auto-Scroll, and export to CSV or Excel. It is free while in early access, with every feature unlocked and no account. It will not win on every site either, so test the page you care about. Our roundup of free Instant Data Scraper alternatives compares the options side by side, and the no-code scraping to Excel guide walks through a full run.
Frequently asked questions
Why is Instant Data Scraper not detecting my table? It guesses which repeating block on the page is the data you want, using heuristics rather than a fixed rule. If the page has several lists, or the content is built after load, the guess can land on the wrong one. Use the Try another table button, wait for the page to finish loading, and refresh before opening the extension.
Why does Instant Data Scraper only get the first page? Pagination needs the extension to know which control moves to the next page. Use the Locate Next button option and click the real Next link or button. If the site uses a Load more button or infinite scroll instead, the setup differs, so check which one the site uses.
Why are my results blank or empty? Usually the content has not loaded yet, sits inside an iframe, or the table you selected is not the one with your data. Let the page finish loading, scroll once, try another table, and open the framed page directly in its own tab if you can.
Can Instant Data Scraper scrape pages behind a login? It runs inside your browser, so it can generally read a page you are already signed in to. Make sure the extension is allowed to run on that site and that the data is actually on the page you see, not loaded in a separate frame.
Is Instant Data Scraper still available? Yes. At the time of writing (October 2026) it is listed in the Chrome Web Store as a free extension. Its listing describes pagination via next-page buttons, infinite scroll support, and adjustable delay and wait settings.
What is a good alternative if Instant Data Scraper keeps failing? If it works on most sites but not yours, try a tool where you pick the list and the Next or Load more button yourself. Grabby is a free point-and-click option that does this, and our alternatives roundup compares the choices.
Still stuck on one page? Try a second tool before spending an hour on settings. A different approach often gets the data faster than debugging the first.
